Job Summary

This role is for a highly motivated Research Scientist to join the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing the MaterialDigital Platform (PMD), focusing on developing and applying ontologies and semantic models for material science and engineering. Day-to-day tasks involve enhancing data interoperability, harmonizing data sources using Linked Data, and exploring new technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs) for ontology development. The position also includes developing quality assessment procedures for data models, advising industrial projects on ontology use, and presenting research findings at conferences. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the digitalization of materials and foster innovation in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.

Required Skills

Education

Doctorate (PhD) in Material Science, Materials Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a comparable field, with a very good dissertation.

Experience

  • Proven experience in publishing scientific publications in material science research or digitalization
  • Experience in (research) data management, databases, and FAIR principles
  • Experience in creating and adapting ontologies or in the semantic interoperability of data models (advantageous)
  • Practical experience with Linked-Data technologies and Ontology-Mapping procedures (desirable)
  • Experience in organizing and conducting workshops and collaborative event formats (e.g., Hackathons) (advantageous)
