Job Summary

Join the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) as a Plasma Scientist to analyze data from plasma spectrometers on the BepiColombo mission to Mercury. Your daily tasks will involve monitoring, analyzing, displaying, and interpreting complex plasma data, as well as developing and implementing new data analysis tools, particularly in Python. You will present your findings at international conferences and publish in scientific journals, contributing to ESA's PSA data archiving and the modeling of Mercury's plasma environment. This role requires a PhD in physics or a related field, strong knowledge of plasma measurement techniques, programming skills (Python, IDL), and a solid understanding of physics and computation. The position offers a unique opportunity to work on a leading space mission in a world-renowned research institution.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (PhD) in physics, space engineering or related field

Experience

  • Publication record in the field of plasma/charged particles in space
  • Experience in data analysis of charged particle data in planetary magnetospheres or other plasma environments
  • Experience in using SPICE kernels
  • Experience in space projects (ESA, JAXA, NASA, etc.) is of advantage

Languages

English (Basic)

Additional

  • Willingness to travel internationally. Employment is initially limited in time until end of 2028 with a possible extension. Position rated as EG 13 according to public service act (TVöD-Bund). Temporary teleworking can be negotiated.
