Job Summary
The Thünen Institute is seeking two technical specialists to support the 'RESTORE' project, focusing on the large-scale cultivation and restoration of the European flat oyster in the North Sea. In this role, you will manage the end-to-end hatchery process, including broodstock conditioning, microalgae cultivation, larval rearing, and settlement on substrates. You will be responsible for maintaining complex aquaculture infrastructure, ensuring strict biosecurity protocols, and documenting production data to optimize efficiency and sustainability. This position is ideal for a candidate with a strong background in marine biology or aquaculture who enjoys a mix of hands-on technical maintenance, experimental research, and collaborative project management. You will work within an interdisciplinary team, contributing to the recovery of threatened marine habitats while representing the project in international scientific and industry partnerships. The role offers a stable, research-focused environment with opportunities for professional development and a clear sense of purpose in environmental conservation.
Required Skills
Education
University degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Biology, Fisheries Science, Environmental Science, or a comparable field.
Experience
- Professional experience in aquaculture and hatchery operations in marine environments.
- Experience in handling and culturing live aquatic organisms and microorganisms.
- Experience in planning, setting up, and conducting scientific or production experiments.
- Experience in the maintenance and troubleshooting of technical aquaculture infrastructure and filtration systems.

Additional
- Willingness to undertake multi-day business trips for fieldwork; willingness to perform on-call duties and weekend work; must meet requirements for TVöD Bund pay grade 10.
