Job Summary

As a Scientist at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), you will play a key role in the Neutron Radiation department, focusing on the development and application of the NEMUS Bonner Sphere Spectrometer. Your daily responsibilities involve operating and optimizing measurement hardware for environmental and laboratory neutron detection, conducting numerical radiation transport simulations, and automating data analysis workflows to determine neutron energy spectra. You will also manage commercial measurement systems, such as Cosmic-Ray Neutron Sensing (CRNS) and soil moisture sensors. The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Experimental or Nuclear Physics and possesses strong expertise in radiation-matter interaction, Monte Carlo simulation methods (e.g., MCNP, Geant4), and scientific programming, preferably in Python. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to world-class metrology standards within an international research environment, working on sophisticated measurement technologies that ensure global trust in scientific data. The role requires a commitment to working as a radiation-exposed professional and a willingness to travel for domestic and international projects.

Required Skills

Education

Completed university degree (Master's/Diploma) with a PhD in Experimental Physics, Nuclear Physics, or a comparable field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in nuclear measurement techniques and neutron spectrometry
  • Experience in radiation transport simulations using Monte Carlo methods (e.g., MCNP, Geant4, URANOS)
  • Experience with Bonner Sphere Spectrometers is highly desirable

Languages

German (Basic)English (Fluent)

Additional

  • Must be willing to work as an occupationally radiation-exposed person. Willingness to travel for work both in Germany and abroad. Position is a 3-year fixed-term contract.
