Job Summary

This role is part of the 'Archean Park' ERC Synergy Project, a collaborative interdisciplinary initiative focused on identifying relics of early cell biochemistry in deep underground ecosystems with high CO2 concentrations. As a PhD candidate, you will be central to both field and laboratory operations, participating in drilling campaigns across Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic. Your daily work involves the enrichment and cultivation of microorganisms under high hydrostatic pressure and CO2 levels, alongside conducting physiological experiments and performing complex geochemical analyses of fluid and rock samples. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the GFZ, Germany's national research center for geosciences, within a highly international and well-equipped scientific environment. You will collaborate closely with partner universities in Duisburg-Essen, Münster, and Bremen, making this an ideal role for researchers interested in multidisciplinary Earth system sciences and early life biochemistry.
