Job Summary

The German Weather Service (DWD) is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join their 'Satellite-based Climate Monitoring' unit in Offenbach am Main. This role is crucial for the European Space Agency's (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) program, specifically focusing on the CCI+ Clouds project. The successful candidate will be instrumental in improving the derivation of cloud properties from satellite data, particularly in polar regions, and integrating measurements from geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites. Day-to-day tasks will involve scientific and technical analysis of satellite measurements, extending existing software, developing new spectral band adjustments, and creating novel cloud detection and phase determination methods. The position requires a strong scientific background, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work independently within an international consortium, contributing to vital climate research.

Required Skills

Education

University Diploma/Master's degree in Computer Science, Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics, or Oceanography

Experience

  • Professional experience in scientific-technical analysis of satellite measurements
  • Experience in extending existing software and generating test datasets
  • Experience in developing new spectral band adjustments
  • Experience in scientific development of cloud detection and phase determination methods
  • Experience in independent scientific analysis of data quality
  • Desirable: Experience in processing, evaluating, and utilizing meteorological satellite data and large datasets
