Research Associate (PhD Candidate) | Wissenschaftliche:n Mitarbeiter:in (Doktorand:in) (w/m/d)
Universität Bremen
Job Summary
This research position at the University of Bremen (MARUM) and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) offers a unique opportunity to investigate the role of whale, seal, and seabird excrement as a nutrient source in the Southern Ocean. As a doctoral researcher, you will quantify iron release from animal waste and assess its bioavailability for Antarctic phytoplankton through laboratory and field experiments. A highlight of the role is the participation in the KrillBIS expedition aboard the research vessel Polarstern to the West Antarctic Peninsula in 2027. You will evaluate how these biological inputs drive carbon fixation and the biological carbon pump. This 3-year, 75% position is ideal for highly motivated scientists looking to contribute to climate-relevant marine research within a collaborative, international team. The role combines sophisticated laboratory work with high-seas fieldwork, providing a comprehensive foundation for a career in marine sciences.
