Job Summary

As a Digital Forensics Expert at the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), you will play a critical role in national and international criminal investigations by securing and analyzing digital evidence. Operating within the 'Operational Deployment and Investigation Support' department, your daily responsibilities include developing creative forensic software solutions, reconstructing deleted data, and interpreting complex network traffic and communication data. The role offers three specialized tracks: classic mobile and storage media forensics or web forensics focusing on cloud and internet evidence. You will support investigators both in the laboratory and during active police operations, eventually presenting your findings as an expert witness in court. This position is unique for its high-impact contribution to internal security, offering the stability of public service with the opportunity for permanent civil servant status (Verbeamtung). It is ideal for tech-savvy professionals who want to apply their IT skills to high-stakes, real-world criminal justice challenges.

Required Skills

Education

Master’s degree (University/Diploma) in Computer Science or a MINT subject with an IT focus. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree (FH/University) in a similar field combined with at least 4 years of professional experience.

Experience

  • Professional experience in IT forensics, software development, or a related MINT field
  • 4 years of professional experience in a relevant IT role required if applying with a Bachelor's degree
  • Experience in creating technical investigation reports and documentation
  • Experience with mobile device or storage media forensics is preferred
  • Experience in web forensics or cloud data preservation is preferred for specific tracks

Languages

Additional

  • Class B (III) driver's license required; Must pass an extended security clearance (SÜG § 9); Physical fitness for operational deployments; Willingness to provide a DNA sample for the internal reference database; Willingness to handle potentially disturbing material (Web Forensics track); Flexibility for on-call shifts and multi-day domestic travel (5-8 times per year).
