Job Summary
This permanent full-time position at the Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock involves supporting the National Data Collection Program (DCF) through a combination of laboratory work and field research at sea. The successful candidate will conduct scientific experiments and data collection on various vessels, ranging from small 7-meter boats to 70-meter research ships, as well as on commercial fishing vessels. Key responsibilities include processing fresh fish samples, assisting with age determination of commercial species, and managing data entry into institutional databases. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on scientific work and are comfortable working in maritime environments. Required Skills
Education
State-certified Biological Technical Assistant (BTA), or completed vocational training as a Biology Laboratory Technician, Fishery Manager, or a related technical profession.
Experience
- Professional experience in scientific work and handling fish (sampling, processing, or animal testing)
- Experience in data processing using MS Office and specialized research software
- Practical experience in laboratory environments and conducting scientific experiments
- Experience working on sea vessels or in commercial fishing environments is highly advantageous
Languages
Additional
- Physical fitness for sea work (seaworthiness, lifting heavy crates) is mandatory. Willingness to participate in multi-week sea voyages is required. Class B driver's license is advantageous. Boating licenses (Sport/Motorbootführerschein See) and radio certificates are welcome additional qualifications.
