Job Summary

The Faculty of Biology at TU Dresden is offering two PhD positions (Research Associate) within the Chair of Botany, starting April 1, 2026. In this role, you will conduct an independent research project in the field of ethnobotany, focusing on either Northwestern Vietnam or Sub-Saharan Africa. Your daily work will involve documenting local and regional useful plants, analyzing usage intensity, population sizes, and value chains, and conducting interviews with local populations. Beyond research, you will be responsible for co-supervising Bachelor and Master students, collaborating with internal and external partners, and contributing to teaching in both German and English. This 3.5-year position offers a unique opportunity to complete a doctorate at a German University of Excellence while engaging in significant international field research. It is an ideal role for researchers looking to combine botanical expertise with social science methodologies in a global context.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (Master's or equivalent) in Biology with a focus on Botany or a comparable scientific field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in botanical research or a related scientific field
  • Experience in field work under tropical and subtropical conditions is preferred
  • Experience in supervising students or research assistants is required
  • Experience in presenting research results at scientific conferences

Additional

  • The position is a fixed-term contract for 3.5 years at 50% of the standard weekly working hours. Candidates must be willing to conduct extensive field research in Northwestern Vietnam or Sub-Saharan Africa. Knowledge of the local languages in the research areas is considered an advantage.
