Job Summary

This Senior Network Engineer role, based at the University of Hamburg's IT service center (RRZ), involves planning and operating the cross-university routing infrastructure for the Hamburg science network. Day-to-day tasks include configuring and monitoring Cisco routers (IOS-XR and IOS-XE), developing measures to enhance network security, resilience, and operational efficiency, and providing 2nd-level support and consultation to participating institutions. A key responsibility is analyzing and resolving disruptions to the shared internet connection in cooperation with partners like the DFN-NOC. The ideal candidate possesses a Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent, coupled with extensive experience in the design and operation of IP routers in a campus or provider environment. Expertise in IP routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, IS-IS), network design, and automation using Python or Ansible is essential, making this a challenging and rewarding role within a leading German university setting.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a comparable field of study

Experience

  • Several years of fundamental experience in the conception, setup, and operation of IP routers in a campus or provider environment
  • Professional experience in IP routing and configuring BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, IS-IS
  • Experience in configuring Cisco routers (IOS-XR and IOS-XE)
  • Experience in large network design, Multicast, QoS, and MPLS
  • Experience in network automation with Python or Ansible
