Job Summary

This PhD Researcher position in Viral Immunology at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge vaccinology against Cytomegalovirus (CMV). The successful candidate will investigate humoral and T-cell responses to CMV infection using advanced animal models and human cell culture systems. Day-to-day work involves applying sophisticated techniques such as virus mutagenesis, real-time imaging of infection dynamics, multiparametric flow-cytometry, and single-cell transcriptomics to identify key determinants of protection and optimize innovative antiviral vaccine concepts. Candidates must hold a Master’s Degree or equivalent in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Medicine, or a related life science discipline. While a background in virology or immunology is preferred, expertise in genetics, microscopy, or animal models is highly relevant. This role provides direct supervision from a leading expert, access to modern BSL3Bi laboratories and state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation, and integration into the HZI Graduate School's structured PhD program within a dynamic, international research environment.
