Job Summary

This Research Associate position at the Institute for General Microbiology at Christian-Albrechts-University zu Kiel, starting January 1, 2026, offers a unique opportunity for a microbiologist to contribute to cutting-edge research on the human microbiome using synthetic cultures. The role involves conducting research on biofilm formation and inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms, the human microbiome (e.g., Methanoarchaea or Bacteroides), and synthetic microbial communities. Beyond research, the associate will engage in teaching microbiology, human microbiome, and molecular biology to Bachelor's students, and develop digital teaching concepts. This is a part-time, fixed-term role for 24 months, ideal for a highly qualified individual with a strong academic background in microbiology and extensive teaching experience in German.

Experience

  • Demonstrated research interests in biofilm formation and inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms, human microbiome, and synthetic microbial communities, evidenced by active projects and publications
  • Extensive academic teaching experience in fundamental microbiological courses in German, covering techniques such as molecular differentiation of bacteria, physiological tests, plasmid experiments, restriction enzymes, bacteriophages, biofilm analysis, and quorum sensing interference
  • Experience with pathogenic microorganisms and cultivation of bacteria/archaea under anaerobic conditions
  • Specialized knowledge in molecular biological work, particularly anaerobic cultivation techniques and experimental work within an anaerobic chamber
  • Experimental experience and establishment of flow cells and micro-compartments for biofilm formation analysis (including imaging)
  • Desired: Competence and practical experience in the methodological-didactic further development of academic courses and learning assessments

  • This position is initially limited to 24 months. The regular weekly working hours correspond to 50% of a full-time position (currently 19.35 hours). Teaching obligations amount to 4.5 teaching hours per week. This specific vacancy is primarily for employees of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
