Job Summary

This role is for a Research Associate in Data Science at the Thünen Institute of Forest Economics in Hamburg-Bergedorf, focusing on enhancing the 'Wood Markets' division. The primary task involves developing a machine learning-based system to detect and correct errors in global trade data, specifically within the UN Comtrade database. This includes identifying data gaps, missing values, outliers, and bilateral asymmetries, followed by implementing systematic data cleaning and imputation methods. The successful candidate will be responsible for conceptualizing, implementing (preferably in Python), and documenting this system, ensuring its reusability for the institute's ongoing analyses. This position offers the chance to contribute to impactful research on international wood markets, requiring strong analytical, programming, and communication skills.

Required Skills

Education

Master of Science (M. Sc.) or University Diploma in Business Informatics, Data Sciences, Computer Science, Economics, or related disciplines with a specialization in data analysis and data processing.

Experience

  • Experience in analyzing and processing large statistical datasets
  • Experience in object-oriented programming
  • Experience in using machine learning methods (desirable)
  • Knowledge of international trade or international macroeconomics (advantageous)

Additional

  • Temporary contract for 12 months. Willingness to travel for business trips. For international degrees, a certificate evaluation from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) is required upon successful application.
