Job Summary

The DLR Project Management Agency is seeking a Head of Department for their "Environment and Sustainability" division. This leadership role involves shaping the future viability of the organization's initiatives with entrepreneurial drive and strategic foresight. The successful candidate will take on significant business responsibility, further develop specialized areas, and drive sustainable solutions. They will lead a highly qualified team of scientists and administrators, overseeing the acquisition, planning, implementation, and quality control of national and international service projects related to global change, climate protection, sustainable development, and biodiversity. This position requires a strong leader with a cooperative and goal-oriented approach, dedicated to fostering effective contributions to sustainable societal and environmental development. The role also involves proactive client relationship building and strategic partnership development.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (Diplom/Master/Magister) in a natural or geoscientific discipline (preferably Biology, Physics, Environmental Sciences), or other relevant fields with proven experience in sustainability research or related to global change or environmental and climate protection. Doctorate is an advantage.

Experience

  • At least five years of relevant experience in science or business
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant research methods in environmental and/or sustainability research
  • Sound knowledge of the German and good knowledge of the European research landscape and policy
  • Several years of experience in international research cooperation or in activities with international organizations or bodies
  • Experience with German and European environmental and sustainability policy
  • Proven experience in managing larger work units, especially leadership experience with employees

Additional

  • Security clearance according to the Security Clearance Act (SÜG) and willingness to undergo a security check according to §8 ff SÜG is required. This is a full-time or part-time (min. 30 hours/week) position, initially limited to three years, with the option of subsequent permanent employment.
