Job Summary

Join the Robert Koch Institute as a Bioinformatics Research Associate, contributing to global public health by strengthening health security partnerships, especially in Africa. This role involves developing and delivering training on genomic sequencing and bioinformatics data analysis, both in Germany and partner countries. You will provide remote support to project partners, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate on action plans to build genomic sequencing capacities. Regular travel to target countries is required to assess national priorities for genomic surveillance. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in bioinformatics, experience with microbial genome sequencing data, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, alongside a commitment to international public health initiatives.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or equivalent in (Bio)Informatics or a Life Science discipline (e.g., Molecular Biology, Biomedicine)

Experience

  • Professional experience in analyzing microbial genome sequence data (e.g., WGS, metagenomics)
  • Professional experience in applying common bioinformatics tools and workflows (e.g., genome assembly, annotation, phylogenetic analysis, antibiotic resistance detection)
  • Professional experience in using at least one programming or scripting language (e.g., Python, R, Bash)
  • Professional experience working with high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud environments
  • Professional experience in handling public sequence databases and platforms (e.g., NCBI, ENA)
  • Professional experience in working with digital document management systems
