Job Summary
The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is seeking a motivated Doctoral Researcher in Physical Oceanography for a 3-year, part-time position (75% / 30 hours per week), starting as soon as possible, but no later than April 1, 2026. This role is integral to the CoastalFutures II project, focusing on climate simulations and their impact on marine and coastal areas, particularly the Baltic Sea. The successful candidate will analyze extensive climate model simulations to understand climate variability and anthropogenic changes, focusing on physical variables like water temperature, salinity, currents, and sea level. Key responsibilities include evaluating climate change impacts on circulation and connectivity in the Baltic Sea, identifying suitable marine protected areas, and assessing changes in extreme events. This is an exciting opportunity for a scientifically curious individual to contribute to cutting-edge research in a supportive and interdisciplinary environment.
Required Skills
Education
Master's degree or equivalent diploma in Meteorology, Oceanography, or a related natural or geoscientific discipline with strong physical and mathematical components.
Experience
- Professional experience with Earth system climate, especially in the Baltic Sea region
- Professional experience with physical processes in semi-enclosed coastal seas
- Experience in visualizing and analyzing large datasets
- Experience with operating systems like Linux/Unix
- Good programming skills
