Job Summary

The Landesamt für Umwelt Rheinland-Pfalz (State Office for the Environment Rhineland-Palatinate) is seeking a Specialist for Biotope Networks and Protected Area Systems. In this full-time, fixed-term role until September 2027, you will be instrumental in the conceptual and planning development of the state-wide biotope network. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve providing expert advice to nature conservation authorities and other stakeholders on implementing biotope networks, and preparing specialized contributions for the further development of protected area systems in the context of biotope connectivity. This position offers an engaging and varied work environment within a supportive team, focusing on critical environmental protection initiatives. It requires a background in biology, environmental sciences, or a related field, strong GIS skills, and excellent communication abilities to contribute to significant ecological projects in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Required Skills

Education

Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master or Diplom Univ. / TH / TU) in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Biogeography, Landscape Management, or a comparable field.

Experience

  • Practical experience in applying desktop GIS systems (e.g., ArcGIS, Q-GIS) and managing geodatasets
  • Good knowledge of habitat requirements for animal species in central mountain regions, lean grasslands, wet and moist grasslands, and beech, oak, and riparian forest habitats, as well as ecological relationships and their evaluation
  • Knowledge of methods for processing and utilizing remote sensing data (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of spatial planning instruments regarding the integration of biotope networks into landscape planning (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of landscape genesis in Rhineland-Palatinate (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of legal foundations of nature conservation (e.g., BNatschG, LNatschG) (advantageous)

  • Valid Class B driving license (advantageous) and willingness to drive official vehicles or be driven by a work assistant in accordance with SGB IX. Fixed-term employment until September 30, 2027. Work location: Mainz. Ability to work independently and manage complex tasks in a team.
