Job Summary

The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research is seeking two Automation Engineers to join the Accelerator Control Systems (ACO) department. In this role, you will be instrumental in the development, commissioning, and optimization of control systems for cryogenic, vacuum, and personnel safety systems for the FAIR accelerator facility. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include project planning, implementing SCADA and PLC-based control solutions, hardware selection, software integration, and troubleshooting. You will collaborate closely with internal departments and international partners like CERN, contributing to one of the world's largest scientific research projects. This position is ideal for professionals who enjoy working in a complex, interdisciplinary technical environment and are eager to shape modern automation solutions. The role requires a structured approach to work, strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration, and the flexibility to support plant operations, including on-call duties.

Required Skills

Education

Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Diploma in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in the implementation of automation projects
  • Practical experience with PLC systems and industrial control environments
  • Experience in the development and optimization of control and SCADA systems

Additional

  • Must be able to participate in on-call duties. Ability and willingness to quickly familiarize oneself with new technical subject areas. Ability to work independently and in a team. Experience with C# and Python, and knowledge of the CERN UNICOS framework are considered advantageous.
