Job Summary

This postdoctoral position at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (SBiK-F) offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the AFRI-CAN ERC Synergy project, focusing on social-ecological dynamics in East African mountains. The successful candidate will take a central role in adapting and developing the LPJ-GUESS Dynamic Global Vegetation Model to simulate ecosystem resilience and biodiversity indicators over the last 6,000 years. Day-to-day responsibilities include parameterizing models, integrating paleo-ecological data like pollen and charcoal records, and collaborating with social scientists to develop future sustainability scenarios. This role is ideal for researchers passionate about human-nature interactions and interdisciplinary science. The position is based in Frankfurt am Main and offers a 3+3 year contract under the TV-H E13 collective agreement, providing a stable yet dynamic environment within a world-leading research institution dedicated to biodiversity and climate change.

Required Skills

Education

PhD degree in Ecology, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Physics, or a related field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in vegetation and ecosystem dynamics and human-nature interactions
  • Proven track record of publishing in high-quality scientific journals
  • Experience in data analysis and programming for environmental modeling
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, specifically working with social scientists or stakeholders
  • Experience with the LPJ-GUESS model or similar dynamic global vegetation models is highly desirable
