Job Summary

This PhD position offers a unique opportunity to join an interdisciplinary team of chemists and engineers at Ruhr University Bochum, focused on advancing the energy transition. As a research associate, you will contribute to the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV by developing high-performance membrane electrode assemblies for electrochemical CO₂ reduction. Your day-to-day work will involve designing, fabricating, and optimizing catalyst-coated electrodes, operating zero-gap flow cell systems, and utilizing advanced spectroscopic methods to analyze material structures under operating conditions. The role is ideal for a candidate with a Master’s degree in Chemistry or Materials Science who possesses strong hands-on experience in electrochemical characterization. This position is particularly attractive due to its integration into a high-level research cluster, the use of state-of-the-art analytical tools, and the focus on scalable solutions for climate protection, such as hydrogen generation and CO₂ conversion.

Required Skills

Education

Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline with excellent academic results.

Experience

  • Professional experience in electrochemistry and electrochemical characterization methods
  • Practical experience in zero-gap flow cell setups and operation
  • Experience in catalyst ink formulation and electrode preparation
  • Experience in advanced analytical and spectroscopic techniques for catalyst evaluation
  • Proven ability to independently design, conduct, and troubleshoot scientific experiments

  • Part-time position (67% of full-time hours, approximately 26.69 hours/week). Fixed-term contract for 36 months. Participation in the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV is required.
