Job Summary

This role at Saarland University's Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science involves taking primary responsibility for system design and architectural planning. You will be responsible for the installation, administration, and continuous development of diverse network environments, primarily focusing on Linux-based systems (fileservers, mail, and backup) alongside Windows and Mac OS workstations. A key part of the position includes managing virtualized infrastructure using Proxmox and overseeing IT procurement processes, from technical specification to implementation. You will also develop security and operating concepts that comply with data protection and IT security standards. Beyond technical maintenance, you will provide consulting and support to international staff and students, often in English. This permanent position offers a unique opportunity to work within a research-oriented environment, contributing to the conceptualization of research projects and the evolution of a central computing network within a family-friendly university setting.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or University Diploma in Computer Science or a related field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in the installation and administration of Linux operating systems
  • Experience in system design, project planning, and IT security architecture
  • Practical experience with server services including NFS, Postfix, Cyrus, LDAP, and Kerberos
  • Experience in a university or research-oriented environment is preferred
  • Experience with virtualization technologies and containerization
