Job Summary

This role bridges the gap between medical image computing research and Helmholtz-wide research software consulting. As a Research Software Engineer and HIFIS Consultant, you will engage in day-to-day software development using C++ and Python, contributing to the Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit (MITK) and managing diverse medical data modalities. Beyond coding, you will act as a strategic advisor to research groups across the Helmholtz Association, providing expert guidance on software architecture, testing, CI/CD, and sustainable development workflows. You will also play a key role in open-source licensing, community building, and representing the organization in international consortia. This position is uniquely attractive as it offers the chance to work at the forefront of AI-driven cancer research while shaping the standards for research software engineering across Germany's largest scientific organization. Required Skills

Education

Master's degree in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, Medical Informatics, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related discipline; or equivalent professional experience.

Experience

  • Professional experience in modern, sustainable software engineering including version control and CI/CD
  • Strong professional experience in modern C++ or Python
  • Experience in software architecture, automated testing, and containerization
  • Experience in consulting, mentoring, or project management within software development projects is desirable
  • Experience in research software engineering or scientific workflows is preferred

  • Proof of immunity against measles required (Infection Protection Act). Location: Heidelberg, Germany. Travel to workshops and conferences required. Initial contract duration of 2 years with possibility of extension.
