Job Summary

This two-year civil service preparatory program (Vorbereitungsdienst) is designed for graduates in engineering or natural sciences aiming to become high-level environmental officials in North Rhine-Westphalia. Starting in October 2026, trainees will rotate through various regional governments (Arnsberg, Detmold, Düsseldorf, or Cologne) to gain practical administrative and technical expertise. The role involves applying scientific knowledge to regulatory environmental protection, including waste management, water supply, and emission control. This position is unique as it offers a clear pathway to a permanent 'Environmental Assessor' role (A 13 salary grade) within the state's environmental administration upon successful completion of the state examination. Candidates will benefit from structured training, flexible working hours, and the security of a civil service career path while contributing to vital public interest projects in nature conservation and transport.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or Diploma from a university or technical college in Civil Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Energy Technology, Hydrology, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering, or Water Management.

Experience

  • Professional experience, internships, or academic specialization in waste treatment, wastewater management, or emission control is advantageous
  • Alternatively, at least three years of professional experience in genetic engineering or microbiology
  • Proven ability in teamwork and independent initiative
  • Experience in administrative or technical environments is preferred

  • Must be eligible for German civil service status (Beamtenverhältnis auf Widerruf). Foreign degrees must have official equivalence recognition (Anabin) and German translations. Must be available to start the mandatory training on October 1, 2026.
