Job Summary

This role involves leading and coordinating the residual operations of a research reactor facility during its decommissioning and dismantling phase at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. As the Department Head, you will be responsible for ensuring that all operations comply with technical regulations and official requirements while managing the transition from active research to safe dismantling. Day-to-day activities include evaluating operational incidents, coordinating maintenance and modification measures, and planning the shutdown of system components in collaboration with the dismantling department. You will also manage personnel requirements, oversee specialized training, and maintain critical operational documentation. This position is unique as it offers an opportunity to lead a high-stakes environmental and safety project within a prestigious international research environment, contributing to the responsible management of nuclear legacy facilities through a transparent, community-oriented dialogue process.

Required Skills

Education

Degree in Chemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or a related scientific/technical field equivalent to a German 'Chemiker' or Engineer qualification.

Experience

  • Extensive professional experience in the operation or decommissioning of nuclear facilities
  • Proven leadership experience in a technical or scientific environment
  • Experience in coordinating with regulatory authorities and external experts
  • Professional background in evaluating safety-relevant incidents and implementing corrective measures
  • Experience in maintenance planning and technical system modifications
