Job Summary

This permanent, full-time role at the State Institute for the Environment Baden-Württemberg (LUBW) in Karlsruhe focuses on the conservation of protected biotopes and habitats. You will be responsible for coordinating various mapping and monitoring programs, including open-land biotope mapping and ecosystem monitoring. Your day-to-day tasks involve managing field mapping operations, training mappers, ensuring data quality, and developing conceptual frameworks for data collection. A significant part of the role includes utilizing remote sensing data and potentially AI-supported methods to advance survey methodologies. You will also provide technical support for the development of nature conservation software and advise authorities on the implementation of the Habitats Directive. Required Skills

Education

Master’s degree or Diploma in Biology, Geoecology, Environmental Sciences, or a comparable field with a specialization in Field Ecology.

Experience

  • Professional experience in vegetation science and floristic identification, specifically within the Baden-Württemberg region
  • Proven experience in the definition and delineation of biotope types and habitat types according to the Habitats Directive
  • Experience in the organization and implementation of complex environmental projects
  • Professional experience within public administration or relevant regulatory environments
  • Experience in applying GIS and remote sensing technologies for ecological surveys

  • Requires C1 level German proficiency (written and oral). Applicants with foreign degrees must provide a certificate evaluation from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB). Candidates must be eligible for the higher civil service (höherer Dienst).
