Job Summary
As an IT Architect at the Federal Administration Office (BVA), you will play a pivotal role in shaping Germany's and Europe's digital public safety infrastructure. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining complex software architectures for critical systems such as the National Firearms Register and the Central Register of Foreigners. Your daily work involves collaborating within an architecture team and with external service providers to manage a landscape of over 70 systems with high availability requirements. You will pilot new technologies, lead the transition toward DevOps and containerization, and represent the agency's technical interests in national and international committees. This position is ideal for professionals who value meaningful work contributing to public security and enjoy working in agile environments using Scrum and Kanban. The role offers the unique opportunity to influence large-scale EU initiatives like the Smart Borders program while working in a stable public service environment in Cologne.
Required Skills
Education
Master's degree or Diploma in Computer Science; or a degree in another field with relevant professional experience; or equivalent professional experience in IT architecture.
Experience
- At least 1 year of professional experience in IT architecture for candidates with a Master's degree in Computer Science
- At least 2 years of professional experience in IT architecture and agile methods for candidates with degrees in other fields
- 3 years of professional experience in IT architecture with expertise in distributed applications and complex system landscapes
- Experience working within government or international organizational contexts is preferred
- Proven experience in taking on leadership roles and driving team initiatives

- Must be willing to undergo a security clearance check according to the Federal Security Check Act (SÜG). Requires full readiness for business travel. Position is fixed-term for 5 years. Location: Cologne.
