Job Summary

The University Hospital Freiburg is seeking a Scientific Doctoral Researcher to join the DFG-funded MinOroBiome project, starting in May 2026. This role involves defining minimal microbial communities in the oral cavity through comprehensive microbiological work. Day-to-day responsibilities include cultivating and identifying S2-level bacteria, managing bacterial isolates, working with patient samples, and establishing in vitro biofilm models. The researcher will integrate these findings with advanced OMICS analyses (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metabolomics) and collaborate on bioinformatic and statistical modeling with national partners. Key qualifications include a completed Master's degree in Biology or Molecular Medicine, proven experience in bacterial cultivation, and safe working practices in a molecular biology laboratory, including DNA isolation. This is a unique opportunity to complete a natural science doctoral thesis within an experienced oral microbiology lab, offering interdisciplinary collaboration and the possibility of a research stay abroad (University of Newcastle, GB).
