Job Summary

This part-time (65%) Scientific Researcher role, based in Rostock and fixed-term until May 2029, involves critical work within the "Coastal Fish Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (KüFi 5)" project. The primary focus is on developing, testing, and coordinating standardized monitoring concepts for coastal fish communities to meet the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requirements. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing external contractor evaluations, analyzing large ecological datasets (preferably using R), building a GIS-enabled database for marine coastal fish, and collaborating with national and international bodies like HELCOM. The ideal candidate holds a university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Marine or Fisheries Sciences, possesses expertise in Baltic Sea fish fauna, and has a proven track record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals. This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to marine environmental assessment and policy, working within a dynamic, interdisciplinary research institute.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (Master's or equivalent) in Marine or Fisheries Sciences. PhD is desirable.

Experience

  • Experience in data collection and analysis of ecological datasets
  • Experience with statistical evaluation of large biological datasets, preferably in R
  • Scientific qualification demonstrated by publication of research results in international, peer-reviewed journals
  • Knowledge of the Baltic Sea fish fauna, especially in coastal areas

Languages

English (Fluent)

Additional

  • Driver's license Class B (with possible experience driving trailers). Sport boat license for the sea and maritime radio certificate (or willingness to obtain these qualifications). Willingness to participate in multi-day business trips domestically and abroad. Willingness to sail on research vessels of all sizes, often on short notice, and proven seaworthiness.
