Job Summary

This unique opportunity, funded by the DAAD GSSP, invites international PhD candidates to join the Graduate School for Life Science Engineering at TU Darmstadt for doctoral studies starting in 2026. The focus is on Protein Engineering, specifically developing biosensors and studying transport across membranes within the Stein lab. Day-to-day activities involve molecular engineering, synthetic biology, and developing enabling technologies like combinatorial DNA assembly and high-throughput screening systems. The research aims to engineer protein sensors and switches for real-time analysis of metabolites and drugs in live cells, and to create intelligent bio-materials. Candidates will utilize high-resolution analytical methods such as electrophysiological measurements and live cell fluorescence microscopy. This role offers interdisciplinary research at the intersection of engineering, chemistry, and life sciences under the supervision of renowned scientists.
