Job Summary
The University of Mannheim is seeking a Data Engineer to join the University IT (UNIT) team, focusing on supporting data-intensive scientific research. This role is critical for the university's overall digitization efforts and participation in High-Performance Computing (HPC) state projects like bwHPC. Day-to-day responsibilities include analyzing scientific computing and data requirements, developing suitable HPC and Cloud-based solutions, and optimizing scientific applications through numerics, parallelization, profiling, and debugging. The engineer will also be responsible for migrating research environments to state resources, advancing HPC/Cloud/Storage services, and integrating new technologies such as AI/ML, accelerators, and containers. Key qualifications include a university degree (Master/Diploma) in Informatics or related fields, programming experience in scripting or higher-level languages (Python, R, C++, Java), and strong German and English skills. Required Skills
Education
University degree (Master, Diploma) or equivalent qualification, ideally in Business Administration, Economics, or Social Sciences with a strong focus on Informatics, or Informatics with knowledge in core areas, Data Science, or Business Informatics.
Experience
- Programming experience in a scripting language (Python, R, Perl, Matlab, etc.) or a higher programming language (C++, Java, Rust, etc.)
- Experience in handling databases (SQL or NoSQL, InfluxDB, etc.)
- Experience in handling software environments (Conda, Jupyter, PIP)
- Advantageous: Experience in profiling HPC jobs (CPU, RAM, I/O utilization)
- Advantageous: Experience in handling container architectures and cluster software

- Fixed-term contract until August 31, 2029. Position is based in Mannheim, city center. The position is fundamentally divisible (part-time possible).
