Job Summary

This Research Associate position, based in Witzenhausen and Dresden, focuses on evaluating the real sustainability potential of conversion processes for residual biomasses within the federally funded “Bio4Act” junior research group. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting independent scientific research, primarily utilizing Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to determine the environmental impacts of converting biomass into high-value products like activated carbons, platform chemicals, and renewable energy carriers. You will be responsible for balancing material and energy flows, ecologically optimizing processes, and deriving sustainable utilization pathways. A key part of the role involves documenting results, publishing findings in international journals, and contributing to project reports and grant acquisition. Candidates must hold a completed Master's degree in Environmental Technology, Process Engineering, or a related field, and possess proven expertise in conducting and evaluating LCAs. This is a fixed-term contract offering the opportunity to pursue a PhD or Habilitation, contributing directly to the substitution of fossil resources and the implementation of a sustainable circular bioeconomy.

Required Skills

Education

Completed scientific university degree (Master's level) with at least good results in Environmental Technology, Process Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, or a comparable field. Opportunity for PhD or Habilitation exists.

Experience

  • Proven knowledge and experience in conducting and evaluating Life Cycle Assessments
  • Professional experience in the material and/or energetic utilization of biomass
  • Experience in knowledge transfer and inter/transdisciplinary cooperation projects (Advantageous)

Additional

  • Fixed-term contract until July 31, 2028 (extension sought). Work locations are Witzenhausen and Dresden. Must be willing to quickly acquire the missing language (German or English) if proficiency is not met.
