Job Summary
This is a fixed-term Research Associate position within the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute, focusing on the "ErhEb" project, which evaluates the usability of elevated levels in pig farming using digital monitoring. The successful candidate will be responsible for comprehensive data acquisition in pig fattening pens using various sensors (camera, RFID, gas measurement) and subsequent data processing. A core part of the role involves implementing and applying algorithms, specifically utilizing AI-based Computer Vision methods for video data analysis, to answer scientific questions related to animal behavior and welfare. The role also includes developing a prototype for an automatic monitoring system, preparing interim and final reports, and publishing results in English-language peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences. This position requires a strong background in Data Science, Computer Science, or related fields, excellent English skills, and a desire to work in an interdisciplinary research environment.
Required Skills
Education
Completed scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in Data Science, (Bio-) Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Sciences/Technology, Biology, or Veterinary Medicine. PhD in one of the aforementioned fields (Advantageous).
Experience
- Experience in scientific publishing and willingness to publish (Advantageous)
- Experience with data evaluation (Advantageous)
- Knowledge of pig farming, especially fattening pigs, and experience handling pigs (Advantageous)
- Prior experience in animal experimental studies (Advantageous)
- Experience in the development of AI-based applications (Advantageous)

- Willingness to undertake task-related business trips; Driver's license Class B (Advantageous); Qualification for animal experimental work with pigs (formerly FELASA B) (Advantageous); Position is fixed-term until December 31, 2027; Location is Celle (moving to Mecklenhorst/Mariensee from September 1, 2026).
