Job Summary

This role is for an experienced Research Associate and Project Lead to drive cutting-edge experimental quantum physics research at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The primary focus is on the development of advanced laser systems for the BECCAL project, which aims to study quantum gases aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in collaboration with NASA. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading the scientific and administrative planning and execution of complex research projects, preparing successful grant proposals for national and international third-party funding, and mentoring PhD students and project staff. Candidates must possess an above-average PhD in Physics, coupled with deep expertise in experimental quantum physics, including Laser Physics, Atom Interferometry, and Bose-Einstein Condensation. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to space-based quantum technology development while managing high-profile international research collaborations.

Experience

  • Professional experience in experimental quantum physics research
  • Demonstrated very good scientific productivity (via refereed publications)
  • Professional experience in acquiring and managing national and international third-party funded projects
  • Experience in budget or personnel responsibility (Desirable)
  • Experience supervising students or PhD candidates (Advantageous)
