Job Summary

This role seeks a highly motivated Research Associate to join the pioneering "2nd Life Metal Components" project at TUD Dresden University of Technology. Funded by the Werner Siemens Foundation, this long-term initiative focuses on developing cutting-edge methods for the sustainable upcycling of metal parts, aiming for a 90% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional recycling. Day-to-day, the associate will be responsible for developing and applying innovative, primarily non-destructive methods for material and part characterization to classify incoming components. Key responsibilities include planning the manufacturing of 2nd Life sheet metal using laser cutting and welding, applying the deep drawing process, analyzing resulting quality, and modeling process interactions. Candidates must possess a strong university degree in engineering science, ideally production engineering focusing on forming technologies, and solid knowledge of sheet metal forming and material characterization. This position offers substantial scientific freedom, intensive collaboration within an international consortium, and the opportunity to pursue a PhD, making it an excellent path for academic advancement in sustainable manufacturing research.

Required Skills

Education

Very good to good university degree in Engineering Science (ideally Production Engineering or Applied Simulation Methods)

Experience

  • Professional experience in engineering science or production engineering
  • Solid knowledge of forming technologies, especially sheet metal forming
  • Experience with material characterization or modeling and simulation techniques
  • Basic knowledge of laser-based manufacturing processes
  • Experience working effectively within an international team
