Doctoral Researcher (PhD) in Physics, Chemistry, and Nanosciences | Doktorandin / Doktorand (m/w/d) Physik, Chemie, Nanowissenschaften (25-222-3B)
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt
Job Summary
This doctoral position, based at the Physical-Technical Federal Institute (PTB) in Braunschweig, focuses on advanced research into two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures, specifically epitaxial graphene on SiC with intercalated metal layers. The researcher will investigate how hybridization and charge transfer modify graphene's electronic band structure, leading to proximity effects like enhanced spin-orbit coupling. Key responsibilities include systematically developing and refining the Liquid-Metal-Intercalation-Technique (LiMIT) to control the growth and stability of 2D metal alloys under spatially confined conditions. The role requires applying modern spectroscopic and surface analytical methods (e.g., AFM, Raman, ARPES, XPS) and performing Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations using the PTB's Linux cluster. Candidates should hold a strong Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Nanosciences, possess fundamental knowledge of surface physical chemistry, and have practical experience with spectroscopic data analysis and programming (Python/Matlab). This three-year, part-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge metrological quantification and publish scientific results within an international research group (DFG Research Unit FOR 5242).
