Job Summary

This role involves contributing to a DFG-funded research project focused on identifying UV filter enrichment areas in the Baltic Sea, specifically investigating transport processes from the water column into biota (algae) and determining if sediments act as long-term sinks. The Research Associate will be responsible for chemical sampling of water in small stagnant agricultural waters, conducting and interpreting analytical investigations of algae enrichment experiments, and managing the resulting data. Key tasks include data preparation, uploading data to internal research databases, statistical analysis using RStudio, and generating cartographic material using QGIS. A doctoral degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Biogeochemistry is required, along with proven experience in conducting and interpreting algae experiments and proficiency in scientific publication, making this an excellent opportunity for a specialized researcher to contribute to critical environmental science.

Required Skills

Education

Completed scientific university degree (Master's degree, University Diploma, or comparable) in Chemistry, Biology, or Biogeochemistry, followed by a completed Doctoral degree (PhD).

Experience

  • Experience with algae cultivation and conducting algae experiments
  • Experience in the evaluation and interpretation of algae experiments
  • Experience in sampling small stagnant waters in agricultural landscapes
  • Experience in writing scientific publications
  • Experience and willingness to undertake business trips and multi-week sampling campaigns several times a year

Additional

  • Must possess a Class B driver's license and be willing to drive official vehicles, including off-road. Must be willing to travel for multi-week sampling campaigns. Non-German degree holders must provide a credential evaluation from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).
