Job Summary

The Thünen Institute for Fisheries Ecology in Bremerhaven is seeking two Biological-Technical Assistants to support the Marine Environment department within the ReOyster-Hatchery project. This is a crucial role focused on the sustainable restoration of European Oyster (Ostrea edulis) reef systems in the German North Sea. Day-to-day responsibilities include the independent planning and execution of the oyster production season, encompassing the conditioning of broodstock, microalgae cultivation for feed, larval rearing, and settlement onto various substrates. You will manage and maintain the hatchery systems and processes, requiring strong technical understanding in aquaculture, flexibility for weekend/on-call duties, and occasional travel for fieldwork. This fixed-term position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to high-impact conservation research, working within a modern, well-equipped laboratory environment and collaborating with interdisciplinary research partners on one of the most endangered marine habitats.

Required Skills

Education

State-recognized certification as a Biological-Technical Assistant (BTA) or comparable qualification

Experience

  • Professional experience in aquaculture technical systems is advantageous
  • Experience in handling live aquatic organisms is advantageous
  • Knowledge of marine water hatchery operations or oyster/microalgae breeding is advantageous

  • Willingness to undertake multi-day business trips to support fieldwork and sampling; Willingness to take on on-call duties and weekend shifts (requires being reachable within an acceptable timeframe during on-call periods); High temporal flexibility and spontaneity, especially during production phases; Fixed-term contract until December 31, 2030.
