Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher to join the GENAI-X project at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena. The role focuses on developing advanced Machine Learning (ML) models to address the fundamental challenge of achieving robust model generalizability in non-stationary environmental systems, specifically focusing on hydro-climatic extremes like floods. Day-to-day tasks involve developing ML models for dynamic, non-stationary processes relevant to flood occurrence, collaborating on hybrid models combining data-driven methods with hydrological process representations, and improving model generalizability across diverse climate regimes, including rare and extreme events. The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree in a quantitative field like Computer Science, Data Science, or Mathematics, possesses strong programming skills (preferably Python), and has experience with ML for time series or dynamic models. This position offers unique interdisciplinary collaboration within the ELLIS Unit Jena, contributing cutting-edge research to Earth System Sciences.
