Job Summary

This position seeks a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher in Chemistry or Materials Science to join the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. The primary focus is the development of nanoparticle-based materials for the rapid detection of Perfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) using an automated synthesis laboratory (Self-Driving Lab). Key responsibilities include automating synthesis procedures for dye-doped silicate nanoparticles, targeted surface modification using polymer shells, and developing fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layers. The role requires implementing in-line characterization methods and integrating online learning processes (Machine Learning) for continuous performance optimization. Candidates must possess a Master's degree in Chemistry or a related field, strong experience in preparative inorganic/organic or synthetic polymer chemistry, and excellent English proficiency. Education

Master's degree (Diplom/Master) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or comparable scientific field

Experience

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master/Diploma) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or comparable field
  • Experience in preparative inorganic or organic chemistry or synthetic polymer chemistry
  • Knowledge of instrumental analytics and optical characterization methods
  • Experience with automated synthesis of materials/particles in Self-Driving Labs and/or high-throughput methods (advantageous)
  • Experience with programming (Python), Machine Learning, and sensory systems (ideal)
