Job Summary

The German Weather Service (DWD) is seeking a permanent Technical Assistant in Freiburg to join the Particle Laboratory, focusing on air quality and particle measurement activities. This role involves managing daily laboratory operations, including the control and documentation of sample flow, and the planning and execution of coarse dust measurements. A core responsibility is ensuring the quality assurance of ongoing measurements and managing the air hygiene database, which includes storing quality-checked data, generating graphics, and preparing data for expert reports. The assistant will also be crucial in the continuous improvement and updating of analytical procedures, particularly concerning microscopy, image processing, and automated pollen monitoring systems. Candidates must possess a completed technical assistant qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or MTLA) and demonstrate fluency in German (C1). Knowledge of atmospheric aerosols, physical measurement technology, and quality assurance processes is highly desirable for success in this demanding scientific environment.

Successfully completed relevant training as a Technical Assistant, e.g., in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or Medicine (Medical Technical Laboratory Assistant - MTLA)

Experience

  • Professional experience in controlling and documenting sample entry and exit
  • Experience in planning, preparation, and execution of coarse dust measurements
  • Experience with quality assurance of ongoing air quality measurements
  • Professional experience in data archiving, preparation, and storage
  • Knowledge and experience in physical measurement technology, especially atmospheric aerosols (desired)
  • Knowledge of pollen collection, measurement techniques, and microscopic pollen analysis (desired)
