Job Summary
The Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) is seeking an Engineer specializing in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Information Technology to provide technical support for marine accident investigations in Hamburg. This unique, permanent role involves the critical task of managing, analyzing, and evaluating data from Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) and other shipboard systems, often dealing with complex and outdated technologies. Day-to-day responsibilities include manually securing raw VDR data post-accident, using self-developed tools for analysis, and advising investigation teams on potential causes based on data findings. Furthermore, the role acts as the central German representative and administrator for the European Marine Casualty Information Platform (EMCIP), requiring participation in international user groups in Lisbon, developing training materials, and conducting in-house training. Candidates must hold a relevant Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification and possess strong IT system knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently within an international context.
Required Skills
Education
Completed university degree (FH-Diploma/Bachelor) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Information Technology, or comparable qualification, or eligibility for the higher technical service in the federal administration.
Experience
- Professional experience in handling IT systems and programs
- Experience with various Windows operating systems
- Experience in developing and delivering technical presentations and training materials
- Experience representing an organization in international expert groups (desirable)

Additional
- Willingness to undertake domestic and international business travel; Service location is Hamburg; Must be able to obtain recognition of foreign educational qualifications (if applicable).
