Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Marine Chemistry | Wissenschaftliche Stelle als PostDoc
Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde (IOW)
Job Summary
This Postdoctoral Research Scientist position is part of the KOFI project at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, focusing on marine chemistry within the Fehmarnbelt Natura2000 area. The core mission is to investigate the long-term carbon storage capacity of marine sediments and assess how mobile, bottom-trawling fishing (MGF) impacts sedimentary carbon release. Day-to-day responsibilities involve developing and executing comprehensive sampling strategies, including regular fieldwork at sea, and processing sediment, porewater, and water samples for detailed carbon analysis. A critical component of the role is the application and adaptation of advanced spectroscopic and mass spectrometric methods to characterize natural organic material. Candidates must hold a completed PhD in Chemistry, Geochemistry, Chemical Oceanography, or a related field, coupled with significant experience in instrumental analytics. The successful candidate will be responsible for data evaluation using statistical methods, producing high-quality scientific publications, and collaborating methodologically with other marine research institutes, contributing directly to environmental guidelines regarding carbon storage capacity determination. This is a fixed-term, interdisciplinary position offering modern infrastructure directly on the Baltic Sea.
