Job Summary

The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW) is seeking a dedicated Technical Assistant to support the Biological Oceanography department on a fixed-term, 75% part-time contract until March 31, 2030, within the KOFI project. This role focuses on investigating the development of biodiversity in benthic communities and the remineralization of organic carbon following the exclusion of mobile bottom-trawling fishing in the Fehmarnbelt Natura 2000 area. Day-to-day tasks involve the collection, processing, and measurement of macrozoobenthos and sediment samples from the Baltic Sea, including preparing samples for molecular biological analysis. Key responsibilities include species determination, microscopic evaluation of samples, nucleic acid extraction, and optical analysis of underwater imagery. The ideal candidate holds a qualification as a Biology Laboratory Technician or equivalent, possesses microscopy skills, and is willing to participate in multi-day sea expeditions, requiring a car driving license and sea fitness. This position offers a varied workplace close to the Baltic Sea with flexible working arrangements.
