Job Summary

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher or PhD Candidate to join the Quantum Electronics division, focusing on the fabrication and characterization of superconducting quantum circuits. This high-tech research role involves performing complex measurements on superconducting qubits within a dilution cryostat at millikelvin temperatures, often incorporating internally developed parametric amplifiers. Key responsibilities include the continuous refinement and optimization of both measurement hardware (e.g., mK sample holders and filter concepts) and control software, primarily based on Python. The successful candidate will actively support the first European inter-laboratory comparison of superconducting qubit measurements, requiring strong experimental aptitude and analytical skills. This position offers the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research, publish scientific results, and contribute to international metrology standards within a highly collaborative and innovative environment.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (Diploma/Master) in Physics, Quantum Technology, or comparable field (minimum 'good' grade). For Postdocs, a Doctoral degree (PhD) with a minimum 'very good' grade is required.

Experience

  • Professional experience with cryogenic setups including corresponding low-temperature measurement technology (DC and RF)
  • Very good programming knowledge in Python
  • Specialized knowledge and experience with superconducting qubits or corresponding control electronics (advantageous)
  • Professional experience in scientific presentation and publication

Languages

English (Intermediate)

Additional

  • Physical fitness required for working in a low-temperature laboratory; Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for business trips; Contract duration is temporary (2 years for Postdoc, 3 years for PhD candidate).
