Job Summary
This is a fixed-term, part-time (65%) Research Scientist position focused on the national monitoring of organic soils (peatlands) within the Institute of Agricultural Climate Protection. The core mission involves assessing the impact of agricultural use and climate protection measures on carbon stocks and terrain elevation changes in organic soils to improve national greenhouse gas reporting. The successful candidate will be responsible for the regular recording of plant species and biotope types on existing and new monitoring sites, including establishing permanent observation plots. Key duties also include rigorous documentation, data quality assurance, and advanced scientific evaluation of collected ecological and site property data using statistical programming languages like Python or R. This role requires excellent botanical knowledge, particularly of moor-specific species, and offers a motivated scientist the opportunity to contribute to high-impact, policy-relevant climate research while potentially pursuing a doctorate.
Required Skills
Education
University Degree (Master of Science or equivalent) in Biology, Vegetation Ecology, Landscape Ecology, Landscape Planning, or comparable studies. Scientific curiosity and willingness to pursue a doctorate are required.
Experience
- Professional experience in mapping plant species and biotope types
- Professional experience in applying statistical programming languages (Python, R, or similar) for data preparation and statistical data evaluation
- Experience in the application of TurboVeg (desirable)
- Experience in handling Geoinformation Systems (GIS - desirable)

Additional
- Driver's License Class B is mandatory. Willingness to undertake regular, multi-day, nationwide business trips is mandatory. High motivation, physical fitness, and resilience are required.
