Job Summary

This role involves working as an IT Architect within the Federal Office of Administration (BVA), contributing significantly to public security initiatives in Germany and the EU. The architect will be responsible for building, maintaining, and evolving complex IT applications, including the National Weapons Register, the Central Register of Foreigners, and systems supporting the Schengen external borders (EES regulation) and the Smart Borders initiative. Day-to-day tasks include developing software architecture for a system landscape comprising over 70 systems with high availability requirements, piloting new technologies, integrating DevOps and containerization, and representing the BVA's interests in national and international committees. The ideal candidate thrives on technically complex challenges, possesses expertise in agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban), and is ready to take on a leadership role to drive digitalization in the security sector. This is a five-year fixed-term contract based in Cologne.

Required Skills

Education

Master's or Diploma degree in Computer Science or a related field; alternatively, a degree in another field combined with specific professional experience.

Experience

  • At least 1 year of professional experience or knowledge in IT architecture with a Master's/Diploma in Computer Science
  • At least 2 years of professional experience or knowledge in IT architecture, agile methods, and related tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence) with a degree in another field
  • 3 years of demonstrable professional experience in IT architecture with expertise in distributed applications and complex system landscapes with high availability requirements
  • Leadership experience required
  • Experience in software development (e.g., Java, Spring, Angular, Test Management) (Advantageous)
  • Experience in managing external service providers (Advantageous)
