Job Summary

Join the Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Bern for a fully-funded, four-year PhD position focused on bridging paleoclimatology and cutting-edge data science. As a key researcher, you will conduct fundamental research involving data acquisition from sediment cores, running laboratory incubation experiments, and participating in fieldwork. A significant component of the role involves applying advanced data science approaches, such as supervised/unsupervised pixel clustering and neural networks, to discover unique 'fingerprints' of past climates. This highly interdisciplinary project seeks highly motivated candidates holding a Master's degree in Earth Sciences or a related field like data science or biogeochemistry. While data science experience is beneficial, a passion for hands-on analytical work and a willingness to learn advanced techniques are paramount. The position offers comprehensive training, support from a research assistant, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and a competitive SNSF-funded salary, providing an exceptional environment for professional development and international collaboration.
