Job Summary

This is a critical, full-time, and permanent position as Head of the Spectroscopic Department at the Otto Diels Institute for Organic Chemistry at Kiel University, starting January 2026. The successful candidate will be responsible for the professional and organizational leadership of the department, ensuring the analytical infrastructure—including state-of-the-art NMR, Mass Spectrometry, IR, and HPLC analysis—supports both cutting-edge research and Bachelor/Master level teaching. Key daily tasks involve managing service operations, overseeing data processing, and leading the technical staff, including scheduling and professional development. The role requires a PhD in Chemistry (preferably Organic or Analytical) and extensive practical experience in spectroscopic methods. Beyond management, the Head is expected to contribute methodological expertise to internal research projects, initiate independent scientific endeavors, and participate in external grant acquisition to support operational costs. Required Skills

Education

Scientific University Degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in Chemistry; PhD, ideally in Organic or Analytical Chemistry

Experience

  • Multi-year practical experience in applying spectroscopic procedures, especially NMR and Mass Spectrometry
  • Experience in managing technical equipment and analytical infrastructure
  • Leadership experience and ability to motivate and develop staff
  • Experience in organizing an analytical department, including data processing
  • Experience in third-party funding acquisition (desirable)
