Job Summary

This DFG-funded PhD position at the University Hospital Erlangen offers a highly attractive opportunity within the field of Infection Immunology, focusing on the laboratory investigation of innate immunity balance. The core objective is to dissect the function of the immunometabolite itaconate in regulating macrophage anti-microbial activity, particularly against the intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii (Q fever). Day-to-day responsibilities will involve conducting complex in vitro infection experiments, utilizing sgRNA-based analysis to study itaconate production and transport, and performing infection experiments using conditional knockout mouse models. Readout systems will include advanced techniques such as multi-color flow cytometry, ELISA, multiplex cytokine analysis, and RNA sequencing. The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree in Life Sciences with a strong academic background in immunology, molecular biology, and infection biology. This fixed-term, 36-month contract provides membership in the structured Life@FAU graduate school and a stimulating research environment.
